Words haven’t been coming very easy to me this year, which is a really new experience. I’ve found that keeping my mind busy and churning has become the best way to distract myself from the holiday season, so you’d think I’d be writing up a storm. But no. Not quite yet.
Another surprise is that I am very much looking forward to Christmas. It’s my first without my sister, whom I saw every year even after our parents divorced and she went with my father while I stayed with my Mom. No matter what, Christmas was for family.
We’re going to have a “Best Food Memory” meal, meaning if we’ve ever loved it at the holiday, it’s going on the table. It’s going to be a really interesting mix of Filipino food, mexican food and even some Hannukah foods I grew up around when my Mom worked at Temple, if I can get my paws on the recipies. My sister would probably have loved it (she had a serious addiction to lumpia–Filipino eggrolls).
As many of you know, my sister’s children tend to spend holidays with me and my family. Though their mother is gone, we want to be sure they know that we’re always a home for them. And, since they lost a lot of their holiday things due to the moves and such, I’ve been working on making them some stockings for Christmas of their own that match the rest of my family’s as well as I can.
Currently, my house has a big fluffy Santa (hubby), and equally fluffy big snowman (mine) and the three kids have giant mittens with little holiday animals on them: a bear, a reindeer and a little snowman.
Giant mittens I can do. But holiday animals? Well, I thought I’d give it a shot.
So, this holiday challenge has been interesting to say the least. I have two more stockings to make and a whole lot of food to cook, but I think that maybe if we keep our spirits up, it’ll be the kind of Christmas my sister would have wanted.
If not, she sure is getting a kick out of all the times I’ve poked my finger with a needle.

These are so cute! And what a wonderful thing you are doing for your sister’s kids.
Hugs, those are lovely, I bet the kids will adore them.
Ok, that brought tears to my eyes. I’m very close to my sister and her boys. If anything ever happens to her and her husband, I get the monsters.
When your sisters’ kids are grown they’ll appreciate what a loving aunt they have.
I hope your family has a wonderful Christmas.
Aw thanks, esp Kinsey. Luckily, the kids know all of us love them, so they’re secure in that. They just think I’m the mushy one.
Wishing all of you a great holiday!
Dee
They are ADORABLE! You are a great Aunt, and a great sister. Hope your holidays are full of laughter and good eats this year, and make many happy memories.
