SCARLET, the second book in my DEAD WORLD trilogy, releases on June 2nd. I’m not going to be home for it like I usually am on book release day. I’m leaving for New York to attend Book Expo America (BEA). This is only my second BEA, so I’m not sure what to expect. The economy has hit everyone, including publishing—HARD. I don’t know if the sales reps will be walking around depressed, desperate, or cautiously optimistic. I’m hoping for the latter. I think optimism is contagious and we’re in need of an epidemic.
The one thing I loved about my first BEA was getting a sneak peek at the upcoming releases and meeting a few authors that I adore. I didn’t embarrass myself too bad. Okay, maybe a little, but it was worth it. *g* I walked away with graphic novels, YA, horror, and romance. It was like Christmas morning…if it continued for several days. There were booths set up by publishers. (I know they’re cutting back drastically this year. ) They were showcasing their various authors (think big names or names they want to make big). There were excerpt booklets and advance reader copies galore. Like I said, a booklover’s Christmas.
The books showing up at 2009 BEA won’t be out until fall and winter. I’ll be signing my third and final DEAD WORLD book, CRIMSON, which doesn’t come out until November 09. It’s a little weird signing my third book days before my second book hits the shelves, but that’s how this business works. I have a good time at signings, but I admit I love walking around looking at the other books coming out even more. What can I say, I’m a reader.
If I can’t get my greedy little hands on a copy, I write down the title and author to order the book later. In my dream world, I’d be able to get a hold of Patricia Briggs’ next Mercy book, Lora Leigh’s next Breed book, Karen Marie Monings’ next Fever book, Stephanie Tyler’s SEAL book, and anything by Simon Green. Yeah, I know. I’m not asking for much. Snort.
If you could attend BEA, what books would you want to get your hands on? If you had to pick just one, what would it be? Mine would have to be the next Mercy book by Patricia Briggs. I HEART her. The woman cannot write fast enough for me. I’d also have to grab Karen Marie Monings’ next Fever book. Yes, I’m hooked and greedy.
(By the time you read this I’ll already have attended the expo and left the Big Apple, but hopefully not empty handed.)

I don’t just want the next fever book by Karen Marie Moning – I need it! That cliffhanger had me throwing the last book across the room and I haven’t been the same since! LOL
I’m in dire desperate need of the next Eloisa James book, Villiers’ story. Must. Have. Now. Also? If Jennifer Ashley could hustle up with her Scottish brothers series, that would be v. nice, too. Connected books! They are like crack.
Jordan! I’m sooooo there with you! Karen Marie Moning and Patricia Briggs are THE two authors whose books I want like yesterday but are nearly 1 whole year away from being published! It drives me crazy to wait sooo long between books.
Those are the 2 books I’d have to pick too!
I just got a note from amazon saying it had shipped. I can’t wait to read Scarlet – this series is so wonderful and unique and I can’t recommend it enough to people.
Hope BEA was awesome.
Aw, thanks, Jordan! If you saw one, let me know – LOL!
I’m with you on Briggs – Mercy really has me hooked…
Hope you had a great time!!!
I tore up a perfectly good suitcase by filling it full of books at a conference. Who cares about clothes when there are BOOKS to carry home!
Space pirates have a special place in my heart, so if I were attending BEA I’d run to the Harlequin booth and grab a copy of Susan Grant’s as-yet-untitled forthcoming space pirate adventure.
Valeeya Blue is the heroine’s name and I look forward to all kinds of kick-butt action and romance. It’s money, baby.
Sabrina, Oh, don’t tell me that. I have the third book waiting at home for me now. Maybe I should hold off until the fourth one releases in August. (scratches head) I’m worried the temptation will be too much.
Louisa, Yes, I understand. I’m currently waiting for Stephanie Laurens’ last Bastion book. I spoke with someone who read it at BEA and nearly turned green with envy. *g*
Jessica, I remember when almost ALL the authors only published one book a year. It felt like an eternity waiting for their next books.
(((Lauren))) Thank you! I hope you enjoy Scarlet.
I did have a good time at BEA. Just wish I could’ve stayed longer. Of course, I would’ve definitely needed to ship back the treasure. No doubt about it. Sigh.
Stephanie, I didn’t see one and believe me I looked. *wg* I did have a couple of friends hunting favorites. I haven’t found out what they managed to get yet. I’ll drop them an email when I get home. I have my fingers and toes crossed.
Mercy is like crack. So addictive.
Jennifer, I tend to ship my clothes back when I attend a conference. Priorities, you know? *ggg*
Heather, I didn’t see that one when I dropped by Harlequin. They had a poster I believe, but not the book. Of course, most of the books were coming out on Saturday and I had to leave on Friday. Oh well…
