Any genealogical site with family trees will provide all sorts of unusual or evocative names, such as Desire Gardiner or Pardon Twillinghast or Zachariah Rhodes…

Don’t forget the Social Security Administration’s list of most popular names by decade … I want my characters to have names that fit their age. What names were their mothers surrounded by when they were pregnant with our Heroes and Heroines? Even if you like unusual names, you still need names for your supporting characters and bit players … at the SSA website, you pick your decade, pick your name!

Behind the Name isn’t [or wasn't] too reliable when comes to Scottish names. I hadn’t been a while but when I visited there a couple of years ago, there were so many errors that I almost died from cringing. :D

Name Nerds is surprisingly good and quite well-researched, plus it recognises the differences among Anglicised Scottish, Celtic and Gaelic names! You have no idea how so many name sites cock up with these significant differences. Some sites tend to be too mystical, too.

IMO, the worst name site is http://www.2000-names.com The “Gaelic names” section is utterly awful.

Wonderful post. Thanks so much. One of my favorites is the Baby Name Voyager that lists the most popular first names (American) by year starting with the 1880s.
